1. Who we are

Begin Well is a calorie, nutrition, wellbeing and workout app. It is run by Mistura Dosunmu, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom ("we", "us", "our").

We are the data controller for the personal information you give us through the app. This means we decide how and why it is used, and we are responsible for looking after it under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).

Contact: [email protected]

2. What information we collect

We only collect what the app needs to work for you.

Your account

Your profile and plan

"About you" answers (from sign-up)

What you log

Kept on your phone only (never sent to us)

What we do not collect

Much of what you record in Begin Well – your weight, what you eat, your fasting, your workouts and any physical limitations you mention – counts as health information. UK law treats this as a special category of personal data that needs extra protection.

We only use your health information with your explicit consent, which you give when you create your account.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account in the app (Profile → Delete my account). Because the app cannot work without this information, withdrawing consent means your account and its data are deleted.

Begin Well is a general wellness app. It does not diagnose, treat or monitor any medical condition, and nothing in it is medical advice.

4. How we use your information

What we use it forWhy we are allowed to (lawful basis)
Creating and running your account, signing you in, and sending account emails (such as verification codes and password resets)To provide the service you asked for (contract)
Working out your calorie and macro goals, showing your diary, progress, weekly summaries, nutrition table, meal ideas, fasting timer and workout planContract, and your explicit consent for health information
Suggesting changes to your calorie goal or workout weights based on your progress (always suggestions you can accept or ignore)Contract, and your explicit consent for health information
Improving food search with the shared food database (food facts only – see section 6)Our legitimate interest in a faster, more accurate food search; it contains nothing about you
Managing subscriptions, once paid features launchContract
Keeping records we must keep by law (for example, tax records)Legal obligation

We do not send marketing emails unless you choose to receive them, and we do not use your information for advertising.

Some suggestions in the app are produced automatically (for example, your calorie goal, meal ideas and workout plans). They are only suggestions: they have no legal or similarly significant effect on you, and you can change them at any time.

5. Who we share it with

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We only use trusted service providers who help us run the app:

We may also share information if the law requires it, or with professional advisers (such as an accountant or solicitor) under a duty of confidentiality.

6. Shared foods and the shared food database

Foods you choose to share. When you create a food, it is private to you unless you choose "Share with everyone". A shared food's name, brand and nutrition details can be seen and logged by other Begin Well users. Your name is never shown. You can make it private again or delete it at any time.

The shared food database. When anyone logs a food from the public food databases, a copy of that food's nutrition facts (such as its name, brand, calories and portion sizes) is added to a shared list, together with a count of how often it has been logged. This helps everyone find foods faster. It contains food facts only – never who logged the food, when, or how much.

7. Where your information is stored

Your data is stored by Supabase on servers located in Frankfurt, Germany (European Union). The UK recognises the European Union as giving an equivalent level of protection to personal information (UK "adequacy regulations"), so your information keeps the same protection there. If we ever store information in another country, we will make sure it is protected by UK-approved safeguards, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum.

Searches sent to the public food databases (which are based in the United States and France) contain only food words or barcode numbers, not your personal information.

8. How long we keep it, and deleting your account

We keep your information for as long as you have a Begin Well account.

You can delete your account at any time in the app: Profile → Delete my account. This immediately and permanently deletes your account, profile, food diary, weight check-ins, exercise, fasting records, workout plan and workout history, and every food you created (including any you shared).

If our service plan includes backups, deleted data may remain in those secure backups for up to 7 days before it is overwritten. Entries in the shared food database are not personal information and are not linked to you, so they stay.

If you subscribe, Apple or Google keep their own payment records under their policies, and we keep any financial records we are required to keep by law (usually six years for HMRC).

9. Keeping your information secure

No system can be made completely secure. If a security incident affects your information and puts you at risk, we will tell you and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as the law requires.

10. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

To use any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will reply within one month. We may need to confirm your identity first.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): ico.org.uk · 0303 123 1113.

11. Children

Begin Well is only for people aged 18 or over. The app asks for your date of birth at sign-up and does not let anyone under 18 create a profile. If we learn that we hold information about someone under 18, we will delete it.

12. Phone permissions

The app only asks for these when you use the feature, and you can turn them off at any time in your phone's settings:

13. Changes to this policy, and contact

We may update this policy when the app changes or the law requires it. We will change the date at the top, and if a change is important we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
